touring on a Savage

I dropped my '98 off today at the mechanic, because it's giving me problems after a 400-mile ride. Two of these guys reccommended against long-distance rides on a Savage, in part because they run hot. As an example they cited a guy who has had the top end of his Savage rebuilt several times after roundtrips from Alabama to Ohio. I just printed Bruce Clarke' Oregon tour journal, hoping for some insight, but haven't read it yet. I was hoping that if I add a faring and a gel seat to my bike, I could go anywhere. May I have some opinions on this subject?
